Generalized Varying-Coefficient Models

چکیده
This paper deals with statistical inferences based on the generalized varying-coeÆcient models proposed by Hastie and Tibshirani (1993). Local polynomial regression techniques are used to estimate coeÆcient functions and the asymptotic normality of the resulting estimators is established. The standard error formulas for estimated coeÆcients are derived and are empirically tested. A goodness-oft test technique, based on a nonparametric maximum likelihood ratio type of test, is also proposed to detect whether certain coeÆcient functions in a varyingcoeÆcient model are constant or whether any covariates are statistically signi cant in the model. The null distribution of the test is estimated by a conditional bootstrap method. Our estimation techniques involve solving hundreds of local likelihood equations. To reduce computation burden, a one-step Newton-Raphson estimator is proposed and implemented. We show that the resulting one-step procedure can save computational cost in an order of tens without deteriorating its performance, both asymptotically and empirically. Both simulated and real data examples are used to illustrate our proposed methodology.

Generalized varying coefficient models for longitudinal data
We propose a generalization of the varying coefficient model for longitudinal data to cases where not only current but also recent past values of the predictor process affect current response. More precisely, the targeted regression coefficient functions of the proposed model have sliding window supports around current time t. A variant of a recently proposed two-step estimation method for vary...

Varying coefficient Models are among the most important tools for discovering the dynamic patterns when a fixed pattern does not fit adequately well on the data, due to existing diverse temporal or local patterns. These models are natural extensions of classical parametric models that have achieved great popularity in data analysis with good interpretability. The high flexibility and interpretab...
متن کاملGeneralized Likelihood Ratio Tests for Varying-Coefficient Models with Censored Data
In this paper, we extend the generalized likelihood ratio test to the varying-coefficient models with censored data. We investigate the asymptotic behavior of the proposed test and demonstrate that its limiting null distribution follows a 2 distribution, with the scale constant and the number of degree of freedom being independent of nuisance parameters or functions, which is called the wilks...
متن کاملGeneralized Likelihood Ratio Statistics and Wilks Phenomenon
The likelihood ratio theory contributes tremendous success to parametric inferences. Yet, there is no general applicable approach for nonparametric inferences based on function estimation. Maximum likelihood ratio test statistics in general may not exist in nonparametric function estimation setting. Even if they exist, they are hard to find and can not be optimal as shown in this paper. We intr...
متن کاملSpatial Varying Coefficient Regression Model For Relative Risk Factors of Esophageal Cancer Patients
In conventional methods for spatial survival data modeling, it is often assumed that the coefficients of explanatory variables in different regions have a constant effect on survival time. Usually, the spatial correlation of data through a random effect is also included in the model. But in many practical issues, the factors affecting survival time do not have the same effects in different regi...
